the golf course

we laid on the golf course

stargazing because I saw it

in a movie once and

they looked happy

and not talking was

the easiest way to pretend

everything was okay

.

you reached for my hand

and I let you because

no one was around to see

except the stars

who’ve witnessed a million

secrets and never told

.

wet grass clung to my hand

just like you did

and I can’t help but notice that

fall is coming and the grass

will be replaced by weeds and dirt

and what was once so alive

will decompose into nothingness

.

we laid there

pretending we were happy

pretending we were in love

pretending things weren’t

on the verge of changing

like you and me

and the grass

.

I wonder if the grass

knows it will die just like

I wonder if you know

this will end because

fall is coming like a

gust of wind ruffling the

short blades we are laying on

and it is almost impossible

to keep the grass green

when it is covered in

winter frost
